End of an Era
So, today, I cancelled my Fido cell phone plan. It's been good times and many years (I think I got my first cell phone with them in 2001 or 2002... it was this one).
I had the G310 for years, and then I had a Sony Ericsson T310 (310 was a good number) thingie with a nasty colour screen seen here... then I had a Hiptop 2, then another Hiptop 2. Then when I started working here and got a BlackBerry on the company, I gave the HT to
the_infamous_j, which still had the best dataplan: $20 unlimited, though you'd be pressed to be able to use more than about 25 MB a month with it.
Eventually,
the_infamous_j got a BlackBerry as well, we switched to the absolutely horrendously overpriced BlackBerry data plans; $60 for 25 MB of Data (and occasionally overage charges, so Jer hardly ever used it).
Due to the iPhone's impending release, Roger's has severely dropped their consumer BlackBerry data plan rates, and Fido didn't follow suit (in fact, when we asked today, they don't even offer new BB plans)... So we went over to Roger's (as much as I hate the company) and signed up for their new BlackBerry plan: 300 megs for $30. Now that's what I'm talkin' about: that's more inline with what data should cost. :)
So, goodbye Fido. You were such an awesome little carrier that could, back in the beginning. Before Roger's bought you out and stomped all over you and made you suck.

I hope to never have to use their customer service. :)
Dude... same company.
It's not like you've gone over to the dark side. You were always there - or at least, your money was always going to the same place.
Not that I can claim much better. Telus isn't exactly angelic, I've just had pretty good luck with them - and specifically avoided data plans.

And yes, but it's still slightly weird cancelling a service I've had years and years, even if it's to a different segment of the same company.
Re: Dude... same company.
The cell phone companies actually bank on that. Only way I've ever gotten good deals is by threatening to switch. Amazingly enough, it's worked every time.

(I hope that link works... it's the 128 media articles all being rather negative about Roger's... tee hee!)

I still want an iPhone, but I don't want to be raped financially every month. Hell, we're not going HD through Rogers because the cost of their PVR is ridiculous and their HD lineup isn't awesome.

Recently they did announce their "unlimited data for $7" plan... but reading between the lines, I get the impression that you are limited to using the built-in WAP browser through their proxy (though AFAIK it does include things like their Facebook and IM plugins). The TOS for it explicitly exclude many non-included apps such as: Google Maps, Opera Mini, and email.
Wow, thanks Fido. Those last three are the ONLY things I actually want to use on my phone. The only reason I'm still with them is due to the good deal I still have which is City Fido.

oh, and i'd be hard pressed to use 25 meg a month, since it's well below dialup speed anyways.
