Osaka Day 3 (Saturday)
After having walked over half of Japan in the last two days, I decided to take it a little easy, catch up on the internets etc, while Meagan was working.
I even went to a conbini (convenience store) all by myself and managed to purchase something (incidentally, the Coke here is really tasty. Very close to the Canadian recipe... The slogan on the bottle (written in English) is Refreshing and uplifing. indeed).
Because it was close to Meg's house (a few blocks) I went to the Modern Transportation Museum, which is a JR West Museum. It's got all kinds of trains and stuff. Unfortunately, it was all in Japanese except for the titles of the displays were translated. It was quite fascinating though. There's a full size model there of what the maglev trains will look like (as well as explanations, which I couldn't read)... The museum chronicles the history of the Japanese railroad, which is really quite neat. There's also a section dedicated to other modern transportation (air, cars, and strangely a San Francisco Muni cable car....). Neat way to spend a couple hours.
Afterwards, I tried to shop at the grocery store and was utterly confused by the choices... I managed to come out with Coke and Pocky, which seemed safe :) It's weird going somewhere where I can't even recognize the fruits and vegetables.
When Meg got home, I declared I wanted sashimi. It's surprisingly difficult to use the internet to find a sashimi restaurant in Osaka. We ended up back at Dontombori and went to a fairly upscale restaurant, where I paid too much money for amazingly awesome sashimi. Mmmm.
And because it seemed fun, we decided to try to go to the Frenz the Gaijen Gay Club. But since Japan doesn't believe in street names or comprehensible addresses, we failed at finding it. Since the site was completely flash (argh!), I couldn't even bring it up on the Blackberry to attempt to find it. We came home, all dejected like. And then crashed like sleepy things.
Today looks like a Kyoto day... And I'm going by myself! *scared*
