After noticing I wasn't able to read small text at a distance as easily as I thought I ought to, I made an optometrist appointment last week, and indeed, my prescription was out of date (not all that surprising, I think the last time I got glasses was before I moved to London, almost 4 years ago, but a little surprising, because over the years, my prescription has morphed very slowly...)

So, she puts my old prescription onto the Magic Lens Emulation Machine, and I'm squinting to read the 20/30 line (I think), and not very well at that. So, then we played the one-two game (you know the one: which looks better? one... or two? one... or two?... ok, now? one... or two?) for a bit. When we were done, I looked at the eye chart, and was able to read 20/20 with ease.

So, I put in an order for new glasses, which I picked up today. And wow, things are so much clearer. The prescription change is enough that the glasses are wonky and cause a little bit of discomfort with just a touch of nausea (perhaps coincidental), but I can see SO much better. I'm noticing details I didn't normally notice (snowflakes on a snowbank, individual hairs in the fur of my cats, etc.) It's like the world was upgraded to HDTV.

On the other hand, these lenses are slightly wider than the ones I had before, and looking through them obliquely out near the edges causes a bit of a wall eye effect and prism effects (so I can see red and blue edges on certain things if I look out the edge of my glasses), which is a weird effect.

The weird effects should become unnoticable as my eyes adjust, but I'm certainly enjoying the world in High-Def.

My vision is fun.. -12 and -10 in glasses, and -10.5, -9 in contacts... basically if i get up and walk to the chart, I can make out the E from about 2 feet away :)

I get the prism effect on monitors, and also if i'm looking at a trinitron monitor through glasses, if i rotate my head, the different green/blue/red dots move at different rates.. so a line of colour unconverges.

I've been noticing that some things are getting harder to see - computer screen, the maps on subways...I'm hoping that it's not time to need glasses yet. I've only been without them for 9 years!
